Remembering those who gave their life so that freedom and democracy would live on.

A colorized portrait of my mother, Helene Guterch, in 1944. Mom was a member of the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), a women’s branch of the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II. Established on July 30, 1942, the program allowed women to serve in non-combat shore roles, freeing up men for sea duty. More than 100,000 women served as WAVES.
