A brief history of Bob Belas Photography
I have been a photographer since my early teens, starting with simple Kodak “Brownie” style cameras, and then borrowing my father’s Argus 35mm rangefinder and accompanying light meter. In high school, I received a Canon FT 35mm SLR and 50 mm f1.2 lens as a gift, and used that camera and Canon lenses for nearly 30 years. I move to digital photography in 2000, and my interest in capturing evocative images has continued to grow exponentially ever since.
Throughout my photography life, I have always been fascinated with nature, and specialize in landscapes, nature, wildlife, and flowers. More recently, I began to experiment with photographing pets, doing informal portraits, street photography, interior room photography, and time-lapse video. I love to learn new photographic and processing techniques to produce one-of-a-kind, beautiful photographs that others enjoy and appreciate. Most of my photos are minimally processed, although, when required, I have added a bit more retouching to bring out the emotional impact of an image. (See, for example, “Pigpen Pond on a Late July Evening” in my ‘Nature – Landscape’.)
My current equipment includes a Canon 7D DSLR, numerous Canon L lenses, and a Tokina 12-16mm f2.8 lenses. I use Yongnuo speedlites and radio remotes for portable artificial lighting, along with a variety of light modifiers for effect. Camera support is provided by a Gitzo Series 3 tripod and Really Right Stuff Ballhead and macro focusing rail, for macro photography. I use occasionally use polarizing and neutral density filters in my landscape imagery.
Postprocessing is done using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, Photomatix, Zerene Stacker. Hugin, and LR Timelapse.
Photographs in my galleries are for licensing and/or sale. I am available for free-lance photographic work in and around the Baltimore-Washington DC area. I scan and digitally restore your old photographs, slides and negatives, and create hard-cover books to archive your cherished memories. If your business requires photographic or restoration services, please contact me by filling out the form on my Contact page (or use the email link on my current blog post).
My goal is to create images that capture the moment and its emotions, that bring enjoyment and awe when viewed, and added value to your company’s business.
All my best,
