CSI Possum (Macrophotography)

The bitterly cold weather kept me indoors this past Sunday; a perfect time to work on macrophotography techniques.

As my subject, I chose the skull of what I'm pretty sure was a (North American) possum. I found it several years ago along the shore of the Chesapeake, while waiting for paint to dry. (Literally: I was varnishing the teak on my sailboat at the time.) A few days in hydrogen peroxide did wonders to brighten the bone.

These photos were taken with a Canon 100 mm EF f/2.8L macro and 7D using incandescent lightpipe lights. Stacking was done using Zerene stacker, with final touch-up in Lightroom and Photoshop.

Possum Skull Macrophotograph

The lighting added a nice, if slightly sinister, effect to the ridges and bumps on the skull, but I imagine most looking at this photo will agree it's may have it's best moments at halloween.
